about

hello everybody, i am ecstatic to present ‘Selected works 2020-2021’. it is my first ever musical project. it is 142 tracks long, with a run time of 563 minutes, or 9 hours and 23 minutes. as the title suggests this project is the culmination of 2 years worth of work - beats or loops or instrumentals ive made from the start of 2020 to the end of 2021. i know 142 tracks might seem like a lot but in the past 2 years ive amassed 1400+ recordings, so narrowing it down to 142 for this project was quite an exhaustive process.

before saying anything else, i would like to give the most special thank you to wenqian, the artist who constructed the crucified teddy bear from salvaged materials found in various markets in italy, and photographed it specifically for this project. wenqian is one of my favorite artists and people i know, so it has been an honor to work with her. i Love the cover so much.

my main musical focus these past two years has been a separate project, one that is cohesive, that has a theme and lyrics - the tracks on ‘Selected works’ have nothing to do with that. these are just the loosies, the best of the throwaways, the good stuff that didn’t make sense elsewhere but that i still feel should see the light of day. i never had a concrete end goal while making these beats, i just felt compelled to, and so i did.

today is my 21st birthday, and i thought the ultimate gift i could give myself is the release of these works from the past 2 years that ive been holding on to. it brings me immense joy to finally let these go.

my process is never planned or thought out, i just load up a sample i like into my beatmaker (teenage engineering PO-33) which i then plug in to my computer and then press record on quicktime player. not a single track on this project is edited in any way shape or form, all the tracks are just raw recordings, which means every time you hear a loop, thats me pressing a button. if theres a 15 minute recording, i sat with that sample for 15 minutes, repeatedly pressing buttons, altering the pitch+speed and combining different sounds. this also means that since all the tracks are Live recordings, you hear all my fuck ups and mistakes, which i think is awesome, because those mistakes or accidents, often lead the beat to an entirely new place.

making beats is meditation for me. i spent the majority of the past two years alone, and while i was alone i made beats and while making beats i thought about everything and nothing, i smiled, laughed, got excited, sad, came to realizations and conclusions. its all been very therapeutic. the longer you listen to the same 15 second loop being repeated for 5 minutes, the more you allow each element to shine - the guitar, piano, bass, violin, vocals, percussion. i hope this project can serve you everything i received while making it. i hope somebody hears this and meditates the same way i did, thinks about all the shit in their Life. i hope somebody hears certain sounds that inspire them to create something. i also hope fellow musicians feel inspired to use these loops in their music. you can do whatever you want this music. its not mine anymore, its ours. this is open source material.

this project is not coherent at all, its ordered alphabetically and numerically because to be honest i only really realized i wanted to make a project like a month ago so there wasn’t much time to organize the tracks and create something that flows well, but also because there isnt a real order in which these tracks should be enjoyed, just skip through and see what you like.

thank you to everybody in my Life for everything, i Love you all.

and of course i had to save the best for last:
it is important to me that i give a big special thank you to william for always lending his ear and critique. i Love you bro <3
